Making a difference. All of our children, all of the time

Sally Leese

Welcome to the website for Castle Vale Nursery School. I hope you will be able to find all the information you need whether you are looking for a school for your child, have a child who attends our school or are someone with an interest in our school. Our staff team work tirelessly for our children to help them become the best little people they can be. Our school provides individualised learning through effective adult interactions in a free flow, child initiated learning environment. Children access Forest School sessions every week and learn independence and life skills through many varied and practical activities including woodwork, risky play, taking care of our animals and cooking. We love to be outdoors and take pride in our sensory and messy play. Please feel free to browse our site and ask us any questions you have. We are very proud of what we do but are always keen to improve. If there is any way we can do even better, please let us know at

Due to the hot weather warning forecast for Monday and Tuesday, please send your child into Nursery School with light loose clothing and a wide brimmed hat. Please apply sun-cream to your child before their Nursery Session and we will apply through out the day too. We will keep the children in the shade as often as possible and provide plenty of drinks throughout their session. Have a lovely weekend all, see you next week. ... See MoreSee Less

As many of you may know Isaiah, an ex pupil of ours, has been fighting a brain tumour for many years now. This Thursday we are all going to wear a rainbow to raise money for him and his family. So get all of your brightly coloured clothes ready! Donations are welcome and we will have buckets on the gate. If you would like to donate via their go fund me page here is the link
Also, look out for your Tooth hygiene pack 🦷
In preparation for our Jubilee party next week we have been talking to our children about how our country is run. We have also discussed our new MP @paulettehamiltonmp . When explaining who the Queen was they asked if Paulette and Queen Elizabeth II lived together in Buckingham Palace. We said that they didn't and reminded them about Parliament. They still decided that it was Paulette they wanted to come to our party. We really hope she can come and enjoy the celebration our children have planned.

Here’s a little peek at our dinner time set up. Our children sit down to eat using metal cutlery and have glasses to drink from. Our dinners are full of veggies and all the things our children need to grow and we promote a positive attitude to these foods by talking about their benefits.

We model how to use the cutlery and encourage them to do so independently. Throughout their time with us these skills continue to develop as they are revisited everyday through our routine. We have had high praise from local Primary schools about the confidence and independence our children walk into the dinner hall with on their first days in reception and we couldn’t be more proud!

Junk DNA is a fantastic book that uses magnetic loose parts to create arrangements that tell stories. We are loving using this book as inspiration in our Transient Art area. The children have been using the book as a starting point to create their own arrangements and bring them to life with their imaginations.

It was an honour and a privilege on Sunday to say goodbye and thank you to such a supportive advocate for Maintained Nursery Schools. He was more than just our MP. Thank you Jack Dromey MP you will be greatly missed. #jackdromey #jackdromeymp #erdington #maintainednurseryschool
Here are just a few of the tools we use at nursery to help children develop their understanding of feelings in order to manage and communicate them.

A particular shout out to Anna Llenas’ ‘The Colour Monster’ which we have found to be incredibly useful in developing our children’s emotional literacy. The book assigns colours to feelings in order to describe them and help children understand them. Lots of our children use this tool to let us know how they’re feeling and some of them are demonstrating a growing ability to recognise emotions in their peers and are beginning to offer solutions if anyone is feeling a bit sad. Lovely to see our children being so caring, kind and supportive!
