Admission and Transition Arrangements

During the COVID-19 pandemic please refer to the COVID-19 section.

We follow Birmingham Local Authority’s guidelines for admission to Nursery Schools.

Castle Vale Nursery School and Children’s Centre is a maintained Nursery school offering up to 184 part-time places of 15 hours per week.

15 hours Early Education (Part time)

All children are entitled to 15 hours Early Education from the term following their 3rd birthday. In our setting, children attend for either 4 mornings and a longer day or 4 afternoons and a longer day. The longer day (busy day) is to make the hours up to 15 hours. It also has the benefit of helping children prepare for school and get used to having a school meal.

Morning sessions are 9:15 to 11:45 and afternoon sessions are 12:20 to 2:50pm. The longer (busy) day is 9:15 to 2:50.

Full time (30 hours)

You may be able to get up to 30 hours free childcare and early education.

If you’re eligible for the extra hours, you sign up online to get a code to give to your childcare provider to reserve your place. You’ll get the extra hours once the next term starts.

You can usually get 30 hours free childcare if you (and your partner, if you have one) are:

  • in work – or getting parental leave, sick leave or annual leave
  • each earning at least the National Minimum Wage or Living Wage for 16 hours a week – this is £120 if you’re over 25

This earnings limit doesn’t apply if you’re self-employed and started your business less than 12 months ago.

Full-time sessions are 9.15am to 2:50 (Monday – Friday)

Breakfast Club, Lunch Club and Tea Club (after school provision)

We also offer Breakfast Club from 8am. In Breakfast Club children enjoy a healthy breakfast and take part in Startwell Wake up and Shake up activities. Lunch Club for part time children who would like to stay for a lunchtime. Tea Club runs from the end of school until 4:30pm. In Tea Club the children make and enjoy a healthy light tea and take part in many different activities.

2 year olds

Places are offered to children from the term after they have their 3rd birthday first. Some children may meet the criteria for ‘two year old funding’ and may be able to start nursery school the term after they turn 2. We offer places to these children after we have invited the 3 year olds. Please see here for the: Criteria

Topping up hours

If the school is not full we may be able to offer the opportunity to increase part time hours and parents/carers pay for the extra.

We keep a ‘waiting list’. You can register your child at any time no matter how young. We just need some basic information. You can register your child at the School Office at the Yatesbury Avenue site. Pop in and see Niki, Rachel or Sam.

We can also talk you through any of the options above and advise on when your child may be able to start.

You can find our Admissions Policy in the Policy section of the website.
